1. Did you know that each month has a "birth flower?" January's is carnations; April's is daisies; and October's is marigolds. When giving a birthday bouquet, it's nice to include some "birth-month flowers" to personalize the gift. Ask your florist if you're unsure what flowers to choose for a particular month.
2. Giving flowers for an anniversary celebration is an exquisite way to say, "congratulations." For an extra-special touch, make the bouquet from a combination of the couple's favorite blooms, or choose flowers that they had at their wedding.
3. Sympathy flowers are always a tasteful gift during difficult times. Most people like to choose lilies for recipients who have lost a loved one. While white flowers are always appropriate, blue flowers and greenery also traditionally express messages of renewal and well wishes.
4. "Thank you" flowers are a fantastic way to show your appreciation, especially if you don't know the recipient well enough to buy them a more involved gift. Choose a bouquet that comes in a reusable vase or jar so the person can enjoy the sentiment for a long time into the future.
5. One special delivery deserves another! When there's a new baby in the house, choose a flower bouquet made of small, delicate blooms, like pink miniature roses and lavender carnations. Or choose a bright array of yellows and blues for a new little boy.
6. "Get well" flowers bring a breath of fresh air to someone who's feeling under the weather. For a recovering recipient, a bright lush bouquet full of color is always welcome; for a more serious illness, consider something more understated, like a single orchid or a bouquet of various blooms that are all a single color.
7. Nothing says "well done" like a bouquet of congratulatory flowers, whether for a graduation or for a new job. Choose a seasonal bouquet that can be displayed on a desk or tabletop, or go for the recipient's favorite blooms if you know what they are.
8. When choosing flowers for any occasion, remember the environment in which they'll be received. Some offices have restrictions on flowers, for example, due to allergies of co-workers. If you're unsure whether flowers would be welcome, call ahead to find out.
9. Remember that occasional flowers are not just for adults! Choose a bouquet for a kid's birthday or graduation. The key is to pick blooms in the child's favorite color, whether yellow or pink, and choose a reusable receptacle that the child can play with afterwards.
10. The key to giving flowers on any occasion is to keep the recipient and the event in mind. While each variety of flowers has a traditional meaning, it's not always necessary to stick to those messages when giving flowers. Just choose what you think suits the recipient best, and what you feel gets your message across.
